Our suburban garden is small by some standards, roughly quarter acre, but even we are amazed at the number and variety of plants and water features we have managed to shoehorn into this space. It slopes slightly as we are on a hill, so the landscape lends itself to a gently stepped upper level leading down to lower levels thus creating different ‘rooms’ with trellis and arches. The soil is slightly acid, fairly water retentive and the garden is shaded on the south west boundary by mature beech, pine and plane trees.
We are two miles north of Southampton in a small ‘loop’ on the western side of Bassett Avenue, the main route into the city from the M3. The garden is south-west facing, backing onto a school playing field. Access to the garden is via a rear gate along a path which takes you through woods which then gives access to the Sports Centre and ski slope.
Leave the M3 south at exit 14. At first roundabout take 2nd exit Bassett Avenue towards Southampton city centre, through pelican and set of traffic lights to 2nd roundabout, take 4th exit returning north back up Bassett Avenue (there is no right turn south into Holly Hill) and take the first road on the left at traffic lights into Holly Hill. Take 1st turning left (there will be a sign at this junction) and after approx 400m the garden can be found on the left hand side before dropping down the hill. The junction of Holly Hill at the traffic lights will be well signposted as will the front of the garden. Ample parking is in the road but as it is a narrow road on a hill, please park considerately for neighbours and passing traffic.
